“What’s Expected of Us” — A device predicts when you’ll push its button, leading many to question the idea of free will.
“The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling” — A journalist observes how “Remem”, a form of lifelogging that effectively grants its users perfect memory, effects his relationship with his daughter. In parallel, a man is one of the first of his people to learn to read and write and must navigate the conflicts this creates with his culture’s oral tradition.
Ted Chiang is a Hugo and Nebula award-winning science fiction author most known for his soulful short stories. His story “Story of Your Life”, about a linguist deciphering an alien language and uncovering the nature of time, was adapted into the feature film ARRIVAL. EXHALATION is his most recent anthology, containing nine stories that explore ideas ranging from free will, memory, and time travel.
